چکیده
Silymarin (SL), a mixture of flavonolignans mainly including silybin A and B, isosilybin A and B, silidianin, and silychristine from the seeds of Silybum marianum L., has been widely used to treat acute and chronic viral hepatitis, toxin/drug-induced hepatitis, cirrhosis, alcoholic fatty liver diseases and other ailments because of its excellent hepatoprotective effect. Silybin is the most active component of SL, which is administered orally in most cases of clinical use. However, its bioavailability is low due to poor water solubility. The present paper reviews the research results on isolation methods, pharmacological activities, action mechanisms, preparation techniques, quality control and market state of SL in the hope that it would be helpful to better understand and use this traditional Chinese medicine. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The protective effects of silymarin on ischemia-reperfusion injuries: A mechanistic review
Ischemia-reperfusion injuries (IRI) occur in different clinical conditions such as stroke, trauma, organ transplantation, and so on. Ischemia damages mainly arise from oxygen depletion in tissues. The lack of oxygen as the last acceptor of electron in the respiratory chain causes a decrease in ATP production and eventually leads to disruption of membrane transport, acidosis, cellular edema and ...

Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen and remains a common cause of burn wound infections. Different studies have shown that entrapment of plant-derived compounds into liposomes could increase their anti-Staphylococcus aureus activity. Silymarin is the bioactive extract from the known plant Silybum marianum L. The objective of this study was to evaluate efficacy of silymarin in fre...

متن کاملAnticancer potential of silymarin: from bench to bed side.
Silymarin consists of a family of flavonoids (silybin, isosilybin, silychristin, silydianin and taxifoline) commonly found in the dried fruit of the milk thistle plant Silybum marianum. Although silymarin's role as an antioxidant and hepatoprotective agent is well known, its role as an anticancer agent has begun to emerge. Extensive research within the last decade has shown that silymarin can s...
